Onsite Grinding of Crankshaft of MAN B&W STX Engine Model 5L16/24

RA Power Solutions was approached by a company based in Vietnam advising the damage of the crankshaft of MAN B&W STX Engine Model No. 5L16/24.

The ship management advised that in case of MAN B&W STX Engine Model No. 5L16/24 the manufacturer of the engine does not allow the grinding of the crankpin, in case of any accident or damage. They recommended replacement of the crankshaft with a new one.

In Fact, we have executed number of repairs of crankshaft of MAN B&W STX Engine Model No. 5L16/24 reducing the diameter, even up to 5.00MM and saving the crankshaft from rejection.

Action Taken By RA Power Solutions to Save the Crankshaft of MAN B&W STX Engine Model No:-5L16/24.

1. On arrival, our technicians inspected the Crankpin number #04 and observed an ovality of 0.52 MM.
2. All the parameters like hardness, crack detection by MPI method and Visual Inspection were undertaken, no problem observed except the radius profile from some areas was found damaged.

Repair of MAN B&W STX Engine Model No. 5L16/24 Crankshaft by Using Specially Designed Onsite Crankshaft Grinding Machine.

In this case of MAN Engine crankpin diameter is 130.00 mm and Bearing width is 56.00 mm only with such a small bearing width, it was quite challenging for RA Power Solutions to design an Onsite Crankshaft Grinding Machine, which can be placed on the crankpin diameter.

Crankpin After Grinding

We have designed and developed a special purpose onsite crankshaft grinding machine, which can be inserted from the inspection window of engine block. The on site crankshaft grinding machine sits on the crank pin diameter and undertakes the grinding. In this case the crankpin number #04 was undersized by 1.50 mm and the final size was maintained, as 128.50 mm with a tolerance of only 0.02 mm.

Availability of Undersize Crankpin Bearing for MAN B&W STX Engine Model No. 5L16/24.

We sent along with our technicians two pairs each of 1.00 mm and 1.50 mm Undersize Crankpin Bearings, after grinding the connecting rod was assembled with 1.50 mm Undersize Crankpin Bearing. The trials were taken, and the engine was put back into operation within 18 hours of boarding of our technicians on the vessel.
