Crankshaft Repair and Metal Stitching of Engine Block of MAN B&W 7L 16/24


We were approached by a bulk carrier having MAN B&W 7L 16/24 auxiliary engines to attend their vessel in Lagos Nigeria which suffered damage to the engine block due to failure of connecting rod bolt and crankshaft as well.

Our team of two engineers, one senior technician for repair of crankshaft and second for repair of damaged engine block of MAN B&W 7L 16/24 by metal stitching and metal locking process boarded the vessel at Lagos port.

Our senior technicians having worked on number of MAN B &W engines inspected the damaged engine block and crankshaft. The procedure of repair in detail was prepared by our technicians and was approved by A class to repair the block by metal stitching and undertake the grinding of the damaged crankpin.

 MAN B&W 7L 16/24 REPAIR | SCOPE OF WORK BY OUR TECHNICIANS:-

  • The engine block was thoroughly cleaned by the chemicals.
  • Paint and red oxide was removed.
  • After MPI of the engine block under taken by our qualified level 2 technician for crack detection, the area having cracks was clearly marked.
  • The damaged engine block having multiple cracks of length from 26 mm to 186 mm were repaired by metal stitching process.

The crank pin no. 4 developed the ovality of 0.78 mm as per the following reading table:-

  • Considering the local damage due to hit on CR pin by connecting rod and ovality, our technicians had no option but to undersize the crankpin no. 4 to the undersize of 2 mm and maintaining a diameter of 128.00 mm with ovality of only 0.02 mm.
  • The engine after repair of cracks of engine block by metal stitching process and crankshaft pin no. 4 after grinding of undersize of 2 mm was put back into operation.
  • This job was done by us in October 2018 at Lagos and is performing satisfactory.
  • The inspection reports duly signed by the chief engineer can be shared on request.
  • With experience of four decades in repair on accidental engines, our technicians have excellent ability to find out the fault and come out with a 100% plan of successful execution of repair.
  • In case of repair field, experience of technicians is important.
