Crankshaft Repair of AUX Engine MAN 6L 16/24 on Vessel

RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. was approached by a leading shipping company based in Indonesia regarding failure of crankshaft in their two numbers of AUX Engine MAN 6L 16/24.

RA Power Solutions technicians with necessary tooling boarded the vessel at Singapore within 16 hours of receiving the first intimation regarding failure of two crankshafts of MAN Engines. This was possible because of holding of the valid Indian CDC by our technicians.

Inspection of Crankshaft

The crankshaft details are as following:-

Observation on initial inspection of crankshaft of AUX Engine MAN 6L 16/24

• In case of auxiliary engine no. 2, the dimension of all the six crankpins was checked, the taper and ovality was observed ranging between 0.15 to 0.26 mm against the maximum limit of 0.02 mm.
• The other important parameters like crack detection by MPI, hardness test and visual inspection was undertaken and no abnormality was observed.
• Deflection of the crankshaft was observed within the limits.

In case of auxiliary engine number 3 crankshaft, the inspection protocol as laid down by RA Power Solutions was also undertaken, All the parameters were within the limit except crankpin no. 2 and crankpin number 4 where the taper and ovality was observed between 0.4 mm to 0.65 mm due to the failure of bearing.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to repair the crankshaft of AUX engine MAN 6L 16/24

• The grinding of all the six crankpins was undertaken and the final size of 0.5 mm was maintained in case of aux engine 2.
• Grinding of the crankshaft of auxiliary engine number 3, the crankpin no. 2 and crank pin no. 4 was also undertaken and was undersized to 1 mm.
• Both Engines were assembled and satisfactory performance was observed during the trials.

To undertake grinding of 130 mm diameter of crankpin having 56 mm bearing width, none of the companies in the world can undertake grinding of crankpin having a bearing width of only 56 mm. The reason being is that it is difficult to design and place a grinding tool on a crank pin diameter due to the small dimension of bearing width.
