MAN 6L 23/30 H Crankshaft Repair | Save Crankshaft from Rejection – RA Power Solutions


We were approached by a company based in Singapore regarding a problem faced by them in MAN 6L 23/30 H engine crankshaft as the lubricating oil pressure was observed to be lower than the limits specified. The crankpin bearings were also found damaged.

Inspection conducted by RA Power Solutions technicians of crankshaft of MAN 6L 23/30 H.

  • The six number crank pins were disassembled and the connecting rod was removed.
  • All the crankpins were thoroughly cleaned.
  • The hardness of all the crank pins was checked by the portable hardness tester and was observed between the range of 223 to 236 on HB scale.
  • All the crankpins were also subject to crack detection by MPI process and no crack was observed.
  • The crankpins were subject to dimensional inspection and following observations were recorded against the standard diameter of 185 mm.

  • On going through the above readings, it was observed that all the crankpins have ovality in excess ranging from 0.08 to 0.11 mm against the maximum ovality of 0.03 mm.
  • The bearing line marks and the rough surface of all the crank pins was observed.


Repair of MAN 6L 23/30 H engine crankshaft undertaken by RA Power Solutions technicians.

  • Considering the ovality and bearing line marks on all the six crank pins, it was decided to undertake grinding of all six crank pins.
  • The grinding and polishing of all the six crankpins was undertaken to the next under size of 0.5 mm.
  • All the crank pins were inspected again and a report was prepared.
  • The engine was put on operation and a load trial was taken.
