Onsite Grinding of Crankshaft of MAN B&W CME 5L16/24 | Crankshaft Repair of MAN B&W CME 5L16/24 Engine


We were approached by a company based in Dubai advising about the damage of the crankshaft of MAN B&W CME 5L16/24 engine.

RA Power Solutions deputed a team of two technicians to Dubai who boarded the vessel in the short notice period of 16 hours.

The joining of the vessel in such a short duration of time was possible as all our technicians have valid CDC and can board the flight immediately.

The inspection of the crankshaft was conducted.

FOLLOWING ARE THE MAIN OBSERVATIONS OF CRANKSHAFT OF MAN B&W CME 5L16/24:-

  • The crankpin no. 4 having a standard diameter of 130 mm and bearing length of only 56 mm was found damaged.
  • On visual inspection of the crankpin, the bearing white metal was found embedded on the crank pin diameter.
  • The white metal from the crankpin diameter was removed and the diameter was subject to calibration.

 

FOLLOWING ARE THE READINGS OBSERVED:-

a)  Minimum crankpin no.4 diameter observed 129.51 mm.

b)  Maximum crankpin no.4 diameter observed 130.00 mm.

c)  Total ovaility observed 0.49 mm.

  • On crankpin diameter, deep bearing linemarks and rough surface was  observed.
  • Crankpin was subject to a hardness test, the hardness was observed between 241 to 277 on the HB scale.
  • Few spots with higher hardness of up to 655 HB were observed which is a normal phenomenon whenever the bearing is seized.
  • The crankpin was subject to crack detection test by magnetic particle Instrument  and with magna flux high intensity torch.
  • Two hairline cracks of horizontal nature with the length of 16 and 19 mm were observed.
  • The deflection of the crankshaft was taken and was observed within limits.
  • The observation of deflection within the limits shows that there is no loss of alignment of the crankshaft.
  • The grinding of crank pin no. 4 was done to the next step size.
  • The final diameter after grinding was maintained between 128.98 and 129.00 mm with the ovality of only 0.02 mm.
  • After grinding of crank pin to the under size of 1.0 mm, all parameters like hardness, crack detection test were done and observed within limits.
  • The under size bearings of 1mm were supplied by RA Power Solutions and the engine was put on operation.

As mentioned above, the crank pin diameter of crank shaft of MAN engine is only 130 mm and bearing length is 56 mm.

RA Power Solutions have equipment which can be placed on the crank pin diameter directly and grinding of crank pin is executed.

We have undertaken hundreds of repair of crankshafts where the bearing length is small.

Most of the on site crankshaft grinding  companies do not have the required machine to undertake the grinding and polishing of crankshaft and main journal having small crankpin length due to which either the crankshaft is rejected or is sent to the workshop for repair.
