Save your Crankshaft from Rejection

RA Power Solutions have been working on Repair of Crankshafts of Auxiliary and Main Engines.  The installation of YANMAR diesel engines for power generation is common on Vessel. RA Power Solutions have been repairing crankshafts of all models of YANMAR engine and other makes. In case of YANMAR Diesel Engine Model 6N18AL-DV, the manufacturer of the engine allows to undersize the crankpin only upto 0.8 mm.

The seizure of crankpin bearings was reported by one of our client based in Dubai. On undertaking the inspection it was observed that all the crankpins were damaged and developed the ovality upto 0.90 mm. As per the YANMAR, the manufacturer of engine  model 6N18AL-DV, the maximum undersize of crankpin permissible is 0.8 mm only.  The damage of crankpins was beyond their last limit and crankshaft stands rejected as per the Engineer of Yanmar.

Following action was taken by RA Power Solutions technicians to save the crankshaft:-

1. All the crankpins were again subject to dimensional check which was recorded and found ovality as 0.90 mm maximum.
2. The hardness was checked and found within limits as specified for YANMAR Diesel Engine Model 6N18AL-DV.
3. The crankpins were subject to magnetic particle examination by high intensity magna flux torch and no cracks were observed.

 Keeping in view the above observations during the inspection, it was decided to save the crankshaft of YANMAR Diesel Engine Model 6N18AL-DV by taking following action:-

1. It was decided to undersize all the crankpins upto 1.20 mm undersize, this off course is beyond the last limit of undersize i.e. 0.80 mm recommended by the manufacturer.
2. RA Power Solutions supplied crankpin bearings suitable for 1.20 mm undersize, procured from the OEM manufacturer based in Japan.
3. The engine was assembled, load trials were taken and engine is performing satisfactory.

The successful Repair of Crankshaft of YANMAR Diesel Engine Model 6N18AL-DV by undersizing it to 1.20 mm and supplying the undersized crankpin bearings has proved RA Power Solutions technicians great sense of achievement as the crankshaft was saved from rejection.

 We have undertaken various jobs of repair of YANMAR Diesel Engine Model 6N18AL-DV model crankshaft by undersizing the crankpins diameter by 2 mm. In other words, the crankpin diameter have been reduced from 145 mm to 143 mm.
