Wartsila 12V32 Crankshaft Repair | Wartsila Crankshaft Grinding on ship


We were approached by a leading shipping company operating heavy container vessels for the problem faced by them due to the failure of the Crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32. The vessel was in the outer anchorage of Jebel Ali Port Dubai.

The Wartsila Engine details are as follows.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to Repair Crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32

i) RA Power Solutions deputed two technicians to Dubai with a portable crankshaft grinding machine and instruments to inspect and execute the repair of Wartsila Crankshaft 12V32.

ii) On inspection the crankpin no. 6 having a standard diameter of 270 mm was found to be seriously damaged.  

iii) On visual inspection it was observed that due to seizure of crankpin bearing the bearing material got embedded on the crank pin circumference. 

 iv) The bearing material was carefully removed from the crankpin.

 v) Due to the seizure of the bearing the radius fillet of both the ends was damaged. 

 vi) The crankpin was dimensionally checked and the size observed is as following:

     a) Minimum diameter observed :    268.45 mm

     b) Maximum diameter observed:    269.79 mm

     c) The hardness of the crankpin was taken and observed between 270 and 560 on HB scale which is considered to be on higher side as per the Wartsila engine manual.

 vii) The cracks were checked by MPI using high intensity Megnaflux torch. multiple hairline cracks were observed on damaged crankpin.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to successfully repair of crankshaft of Wartsila 12V32

 i) The above dimensional and inspection reports showed that the crankpin is seriously damaged as the radius fillet profile was also  lost due to the accident.

 ii) The main challenge was that the vessel sailing schedule was fixed for Galle Sri Lanka and the repair of the crank pin was to be executed while sailing of the vessel from Jebel Ali Port Dubai to Galle Port Sri Lanka.

 iii) The execution Plan was finalised in consultation with the chief engineer of the vessel and grinding was started while sailing of the vessel. 

 iv) Due to the excessive damage of the crank pin and radius fillet of both ends our technicians have to undertake the grinding to the undersize of 2.0 mm.   

 v) The radius fillet of both ends was also repaired while sailing of the vessel. 

 vi) The final size of crank pin maintained after grinding was as following: 

      a) Minimum size of crankpin observed after grinding:     267.98 mm

      b) Maximum size of crankpin observed after grinding:    268.00 mm

 The above dimensions show that the crankpin was undersized by 2.0mm, taper & ovality was maintained within 0.02 mm which is far better then the wartsila tolerance stipulated in manual.

 vii) The surface finish was checked by the latest mitutoyo roughness tester and it was observed within the RA value of 0.12 and 0.10 which is far superior to the original surface finish recommended by wartsila as a manufacturer of engines.
