Yanmar 6M220L-SN Crankshaft Grinding and Repair On Site | Yanmar Engine Crankshaft Machining

We were approached by a company based in Malaysia for the problem faced by them in crankshaft of Yanmar 6M220L-SN.

It was reported by the chief engineer that the bearing of crankpin no.1 got seized and stuck to the crankpin diameter.

THE DETAILS OF ENGINE AND CRANKSHAFT ARE AS FOLLOWING:-

ACTION TAKEN BY RA POWER SOLUTIONS FOR REPAIR OF CRANKSHAFT OF YANMAR 6M220L-SN:-

• Team of two technicians  boarded the vessel in Egypt.
• It was observed that bearing of crank pin no. 1 got seized and was embedded on the crankpin no.1 diameter.
• The bearing was cut and removed from the crank pin.
• In order to take the dimensions of the crank pin the white metal was removed by polishing.
• The ovality of 0.20 mm was observed.
• The crankpin no.1 was also subject to hardness test and crack detection test by MPI and no abnormalities were observed.
• Since, it was a serious accident and the bearing got embedded on the crankpin no.1 the MPI crack detection test was done by high intensity magna flux torch.
• The crankshaft deflection was checked and observed within the limits stipulated in Yanmar manual.
• The run out on the main journal was also checked and all the readings were observed within the limits.
• Deep line marks, poor surface finish and depressions were observed on the crankpin.

 ACTION TAKEN BY RA POWER SOLUTIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL REPAIR OF CRANKSHAFT OF YANMAR 6M220L-SN:-

Considering the above observations, RA Power Solutions had no option but to undertake the grinding of crankpin no.1 maintaining the following final dimensions:-

• Minimum diameter maintained after grinding – 169.18 mm
• Maximum diameter maintained after grinding – 169.20 mm
• Ovality maintained after grinding – 0.02 mm

Since the under size crank pin bearing was available on board the vessel engine was put back on operation with minimum down time.

This job was executed in September 2019 and pre and final inspection reports of crankshaft duly signed and stamped by chief engineer can be shared with clients on request.

SUCCESSFUL REPAIR OF CRANKSHAFT OF YANMAR 6M220L-SN ENGINE:-

The crank pin having a diameter of 170 mm and bearing width of only 66 mm was repaired by us successfully.

We have the on site crankshaft grinding machine designed specially to work on the crank pin and main journals having small bearing width.

None of the companies in the world have the latest technology equipment which can grind the crankpin and main journal having small bearing width.
