We received a call from one of the world’s leading shipping company based in Italy advising regarding failure of the crankshaft of Yanmar M200AL-DT. The vessel was on the way to Lome port in Lome, Togo, West Africa.

CRANKSHAFT DETAILS OF YANMAR M200AL-DT ENGINE:-


Our team of two technicians boarded the vessel at Lome, Togo and observed following:-

  • The white metal of the bearing was found in the oil sump of the engine.
  • The presence of white metal bearing material in the sump necessitated opening of all 6 connecting rods for inspection of crankpins of the crankshaft.
  • The crankpin no.4 was observed badly damaged with deep scoring and bearing marks.
  • Remaining crankpins on visual inspection had light bearing marks and rough surface.
  • The six nos. crankpins were inspected dimensionally for taper and ovality.

ACTION TAKEN BY RA POWER SOLUTIONS FOR SUCCESS FULL REPAIR THE CRANKSHAFT OF  YANMAR  M200AL-DT ENGINE:-

The ovality in case of crank pin no. 4 was observed as 0.36 mm which is considered to be quite  on higher side.

The crank pin no.4 was ground to the second under size of 0.80 mm and the final size was maintained as per the report pasted below:-

All remaining crank pins i.e. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 were polished by the special crankshaft polishing machine and the surface finish was maintained as per the international standards.

In this case, the hardness, MPI for crack detection, deflection was taken before and after repair and was found within acceptable limits.

REPAIR OF CRANKSHAFT OF YANMAR  M200AL-DT IN COVID-19 TIMES:-

RA Power Solutions technicians were able to fly to Togo in a short notice as all our technicians have valid CDC. Our on site crankshaft grinding machine is compact and light-weight and was carried as an accompanied baggage by the technicians. Hence, no time was wasted in booking the machine in cargo, custom clearance etc.

In this difficult time of covid-19, when the air fare and extra weight charges are exorbitantly high with weight restrictions imposed by Airlines our clients save money towards the air freight of the  due to the latest design of our equipment and light weight.

We have the expertise of working on crank pins and main journals having small diameter and bearing length.

In the case of Yanmar M200AL-DT, the crank pin standard diameter is only 152 mm and bearing length is only 61 mm. Most of the companies in the world do not have the necessary equipment to undertake the repair of damage crank pins and main journal having small bearing width and recommend to remove the crankshaft for repairs in the workshop.
