Wartsila 8L32 Crankshaft Repair Wartsila Engine Crankshaft Grinding


RA Power Solutions was advised about a serious accident on board a vessel of auxiliary engine of Wartsila 8L32 which resulted in the damage of the crankshaft.

RA Power Solutions deputed two technicians at the Port of Khorfakkan in Dubai along with an onsite crankshaft grinding machine & necessary instruments.

The major technical details of wartsila engine 8L32 crankshaft is as following:

Major observation after inspection of Wartsila Engine 8L32 crankshaft

  • On a visual inspection by RA Power Solutions technicians of the Wartsila 8L32 crankshaft it was observed that the bearing material in excess was found in the oil sump, in the position below the crankpin no 1 & 5 and in this situation it was necessary to open the connecting rods of all the crankpins and undertake the inspection.
  • It was observed that crankpin no. 01 and crankpin no. 05 were badly damaged due to the seizure of bearing and the bearing material was embedded in the crank pin diameter.
  • After the removal of embedded bearing material the crankpin no. 01 and 05 were subject to dimensional inspection; excessive ovality was observed with deep bearing line marks and localized damage.
  • The remaining crankpins were also subject to dimensional inspection, crack detection by MPI, and hardness test and all the parameters were observed within a limit.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions for successful repair of Wartsila 8L32 crankshaft

  • The crankpin no. 01 grinding was undertaken in different steps in spite of reducing the diameter of crank no. 01 by 1.0 mm. The deep scoring line marks were still observed. It was decided to grind the crankpin to the undersize of 1.5 mm.
  • Similarly the grinding of crankpin no. 05 was undertaken to the undersize of 1.0 mm.
  • The balance crankpins due to bearing line marks and in order to improve the surface finish were polished.
  • The above repair of crankshaft of wartsila 8L32 was completed at the Port of Khorfakkan in Dubai within 5 days.
  • Our technicians also assisted the ship staff in inspection of connecting rods dimensionally and by undertaking the crack detection test by MPI process.
  • The engine was put on operation and performance was found satisfactory.
