Crankshaft Repair of MAN Diesel Engine Model No. 9L28/32 H


RA Power Solutions was advised about the damage of crank pin unit no. 5 of MAN Diesel Engine Model No. 9L28/32 H on a vessel sailing near Indonesian Port.

On the basis of the Seaman Book held by our technicians our team of two technicians arrived on board the vessel in a short time of 18 hrs with the portable light weight crankshaft grinding equipment and instruments required to conduct the inspection. The VISA was obtained on arrival.

MAIN OBSERVATIONS OF CRANKSHAFT OF MAN DIESEL ENGINE MODEL NO. 9L28 /32 H AFTER INSPECTION

i) The crankpin has standard diameter of 230.00mm and the crankpin bearing width is only 95 mm.
ii) The crankpin no. 5 was observed badly damaged due to the seizure of the bearing.The minimum & maximum size of crankpin was observed as following:

  •  Minimum diameter of crankpin observed: - 228.49 mm
  •  Maximum diameter of crankpin observed: - 228.86 mm

The above reading shows that the crankpin was already ground and was undersized by  1.00 mm.

The Ovality of 0.51 mm was observed considering the standard size after grinding of 229.00 mm.

iii) Hardness of the damaged crankpin was checked and was observed between 220 HB and 265 HB.
iv) The MPI for crack detection with high intensity magnaflux torch was conducted and no crack or abnormality was observed.
v) The deflection of the crankshaft was checked and was observed within limit.

ACTION TAKEN BY RA POWER SOLUTIONS FOR SUCCESSFULY REPAIR OF CRANKSHAFT OF MAN DIESEL ENGINE MODEL NO. 9L28/32 H

After initial inspection of the crankpin of unit no. 5 as per details mentioned above the grinding of the crankpin was taken up.
It was a container vessel with limited stay at Port. RA Power Solutions technicians worked non- stop of the vessel and were able to finish the grinding & repair of crankpin no. 5 in a record time only of 16 hrs from the time of boarding on the vessel.
The final size of the crankpin was maintained as following:
  1. After initial inspection of the crankpin of unit no. 5 as per details mentioned above the grinding of the crankpin was taken up.
  2. It was a container vessel with limited stay at Port. RA Power Solutions technicians worked non- stop of the vessel and were able to finish the grinding & repair of crankpin no. 5 in a record time only of 16 hrs from the time of boarding on the vessel.
  3. The final size of the crankpin was maintained as following:
  • Minimum diameter of crankpin after grinding: - 227.98 mm
  • Maximum diameter of crankpin after grinding:- 228.00 mm

 

The grinding was done with in ovality of only 0.02mm which is better than the tolerance specified in the manufacturer manual. The surface finish of crankpin after grinding & polishing was maintained to < 20 RA value.

The undersized crankpin bearing of 2.0 mm was available on the vessel and the engine was immediately commissioned and was put on trial.
