An onsite crankshaft grinding machine is designed for repairing crankpins and main journals without removing the crankshaft from the engine. In our day-to-day field work, this capability is often the deciding factor between returning a vessel to service quickly or spending additional time on dismantling and workshop repairs. We install the machine directly on the engine and carry out insitu crankshaft grinding while the crankshaft remains in position.

We have repaired well over fifteen thousand crankshafts used in diesel engines, compressors, pumps, forging hammers, and similar rotating equipment. The onsite crankshaft grinding machine is used for crankshaft diameters up to 700 mm, and the complete grinding operation is performed without dismantling the engine. Since the equipment is portable, our technicians transport it to vessels, power plants, offshore installations, and industrial sites worldwide, allowing repairs to be completed where the machinery is installed.
On board a vessel, removing a crankshaft is rarely the preferred option unless the damage makes it unavoidable. Engine room access, lifting arrangements, vessel schedules, and drydock availability all influence the repair method. Design and Construction of the Onsite Crankshaft Grinding Machine

(i) Compact Design for Onboard Installation

In our experience, one of the biggest challenges during an onboard repair is the limited working space around the engine. The onsite crankshaft grinding machine is designed with a compact construction so it can be installed inside restricted engine room spaces without removing the crankshaft or dismantling major engine components. Although the machine is lightweight enough to be transported easily to vessels and industrial sites, it remains sufficiently rigid during machining to maintain accurate alignment throughout the grinding operation.

(ii) High-Strength Alloy Steel Construction

The machine is manufactured from special alloy steels to withstand continuous use under field conditions. During installation, we mount and align the machine directly on the crankshaft journal before grinding begins. Proper alignment is essential to keep the journal geometry, including ovality, taper, and the specified fillet radius, within OEM tolerances. The mechanical design is straightforward, making routine inspection, servicing, and maintenance practical when the equipment is used at shipyards, power plants, and onboard vessels in different parts of the world.

Before machining begins, we inspect the damaged crankpin or main journal and record all critical dimensions to determine the extent of wear or damage.
The onsite crankshaft grinding machine is mounted and aligned directly on the crankshaft to ensure accurate machining throughout the repair.
During grinding, we continuously monitor ovality, taper, fillet radius, and journal dimensions to keep the repaired journal within OEM regrind limits.
After grinding, the journal is polished to achieve the specified Ra surface finish, ensuring proper hydrodynamic lubrication and reliable bearing performance.
Where applicable, the repaired journal is matched with the correct undersized bearing shells in accordance with the engine manufacturer's specifications.
The machine is designed to operate with minimum vibration, allowing close dimensional and geometric tolerances to be maintained throughout the repair process.
The onsite crankshaft grinding machine is available for crankshaft diameters ranging from 60 mm to 700 mm. Subject to safe operating conditions, engine accessibility, and the vessel owner's approval, the machine can be used for grinding and polishing the crankshaft while the vessel is sailing.
Where required, dimensional inspection records can be prepared to support repairs carried out in accordance with OEM requirements and the applicable classification society procedures.

Training for the Onsite Crankshaft Grinding Machine

We provide practical training at the customer's workshop using either a dummy crankshaft or an actual crankshaft requiring repair.
The training covers machine installation, alignment, grinding procedures, polishing techniques, and dimensional inspection.
Operators are trained to measure and control ovality, taper, fillet radius, and Ra surface finish during machining. We also cover routine maintenance, equipment upkeep, calibration checks, and safe operating practices.
Hands-on training enables technicians to operate the onsite crankshaft grinding machine confidently while maintaining OEM tolerances during field repairs.
