- All the six crankpins of MAN 6L32/40 having a standard diameter of 290 mm were inspected for taper & ovality. It was observed that all six crankpins developed excessive ovality ranging from 0.10 mm to 0.25 mm which is on the higher side in comparison to the permissible ovality of 0.03 mm stipulated in maintenance regulations.
- All the crankpins were checked by portable hardness equipment, and hardness was observed within limits.
- MPI was undertaken for crack detection and no abnormality was found.
- After the initial inspection the grinding of crankpins was undertaken. One crankpin was undersized by 2.0 mm due to local damage and all other crankpins were undersized by 0.5 mm.
- Our technicians also helped the ship staff in calibrating the connecting rods in order to ensure satisfactory performance of the engine after crankshaft repair.
