Generally following procedure is adopted in order to maximize the lifetime of old bearing or new bearing manufactured by RA Power Solutions:

  • Incase of old bearing, the white metal babbitt is removed under a strict supervision of experienced technicians.
  • The melting pot temperature is strictly controled for easy removal of white metal from the steel casing.
  • Bearing shell is subject to hardness test.
  • The white metal bonding on the hardened surface results to the failure. Hence the hard spots are removed by the scooping procedure.
  • Bearing shell is subject to crack detection by MPI. No cracks whatsoever are accepted.
  • The bearing shell is sand blasted.
  • All the dimensions including the profile of the bearing is checked and recorded.
  • In case of thin shell type of bearing having thickness of 4mm to 9 mm dedicated die and tooling is designed and fabricated to maintain the original profile and crush height.
  •  Rebabbitting of babbitt white metal is done using high quality centrifugal casting equipment
    with full control of temperature.
  • Final machining is undertaken on latest CNC equipment maintaining the dimensions strictly as per the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Final quality checks like ultrasound, MPI, dimensional inspection is undertaken by experienced technicians and reports are shared.

Our Recommendation: It is our experience that while old bearings are repaired maintaining the high quality and dimensions as per the manufacturer requirement but no attention is paid on the shaft which is supported on the white metal babbitt bearing.

Generally following defects are observed on the shaft which may cause the failure of white metal bearing:

  • Development of excessive taper and ovality in the shaft. This needs to be checked by the experienced technician prior to the fitment of white metal babbitt bearing.
  • Presence of bearing line marks and pitting. This needs to be removed prior to the fitment of white metal babbitt bearing
  • No importance is given to the surface finish of the shaft on which bearing is placed. This is important for long life of bearing and shaft. The recommended shaft surface finish is 0.20 RA value.
  • Loss of alignment of the shaft. This needs to be checked.
  • Improper oil gap between the bearing and the shaft.
