Daihatsu DC 17 Crankshaft Repair | Crankshaft Grinding
Daihatsu 5DC-17 auxiliary engine installation on vessels is very common. The population of Daihatsu 5DC-17 is very high. In spite of being one of the popular auxiliary engine, there is a major problem which ship owners are facing in the crankshaft.
We will like to summarize problems faced in the Crankshaft of Daihatsu 5DC-17 as following
- Daihatsu 5DC-17 auxiliary engine crankshaft has a standard diameter of 145 mm. The crankpin bearing width is only 64 mm.
- The manufacturer of Daihatsu engine for the reasons best known to them have designed the crankshaft to have a hardness of only 240 HB. It is called a soft crankshaft in a common language. The taper & ovality beyond the maximum permissible limit is developed, causing various problems including failure of bearings.
- Due to the low hardness of the crankshaft crank pin & main journal diameter are worn out very fast.
- The taper & ovality beyond the maximum permissible limit is developed, causing various problems including failure of bearings.
- Due to the crankpin bearing width of only 64 mm no other company in the world has the equipment to undertake the grinding of crankpin in situ as they don't have equipment as small as to sit on the crankpin diameter of 145 mm with a crank pin bearing length of only 64 mm.
- It is our experience that the excessive taper & ovality develops normally after an operation of the engine for approximately 30000 hours whereas in the case of Daihatsu DC-17 ovality & taper develop within short hours of operation.
