MAN 5L 16/24 Crankshaft Grinding | MAN Engine Crankshaft Repair

RA Power Solutions was approached by a company based in Dubai regarding a problem in the crankshaft of MAN 5L 16/24.

We deputed two technicians to Gangavaram Port Visakhapatnam with a portable crankshaft grinding machine and instruments for inspection purposes.

Main observation of crankshaft of MAN 5L 16/24

• On inspection of a crankshaft of MAN 5L 16/24 excessive ovality was observed in case of crankpin no. 02 and crankpin no. 04 all other crankpins dimensions were within the limits.
• The MPI test for crack detection with a high-intensity magnaflux torch was done and no crack was observed.
• Hardness was found within limits.
• On visual inspection the radius fillet of crank pin no. 02 and crankpin no 04 profile was observed damaged.
• The bearing line marks were also observed in remaining crankpins.
  

Action taken by RA Power Solutions for successful Repair of MAN 5L 16/24

• The grinding of crank pin no. 02 was started with a specially designed crankshaft grinding machine which can undertake grinding of crank pin of 130 mm diameter and can also sit on crankpin width of 56 mm only.
• The grinding of crankpin no. 02 to the undersize of 1.5 mm was done. The crank pin diameter of crankpin no. 04 was also reduced by 1.0 mm.
• The remaining crankpins were polished to remove the bearing line marks and improve the surface finish.

Supply of Undersized Bearings by RA Power Solutions

Considering the urgency of repair and in order to put back the engine in operation in minimum possible time RA Power Solutions supplied the undersize bearings of crankpin of 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and standard size bearings. The engine was put back into operation and performance was observed satisfactory.
