MAN STX 18V28/32S Diesel Power Plant In Iraq

 

A Diesel Power Plant in Iraq has multiple MAN STX 18V28/32S engines generating electrical power, this power is supplied continuously for residential and commercial use, and the engines operate continuously.

The Power Plant faced multiple problems in the crankshaft of MAN STX 18V28/32S engines. The details are pasted below:

Brief Description of Problem Faced in Crankshaft MAN STX 18V28/32S

 

  1. In Most cases, the crankpins, having a standard diameter of 230.00 MM and a bearing width of 180.00 MM, developed excessive ovality. This ovality in the crankpins was causing repeated failure of the crankpin bearing.
  2. Deep Bearing Line marks were observed on crankpins, which may be, due to non-replacement of crankpin bearings after the hours of operations stipulated in the maintenance manual of the manufacturer. The use of poor quality lubricating oil can be the other reason for development of Line Marks. 
  3. In case of a few crankpins, the seizure of the bearing was observed.
  4. Visually, the radius fillet and lubricating oil hole were found maintaining the original profile.

Action Taken by RA Power Solutions to Repair the Crankshaft MAN STX 18V28/32S

  1. RA Power Technicians followed the protocol of inspection in which the damaged crankpins were subject to dimensional check, Crack Detection by MPI, Hardness Check etc. The pre Inspection reports were prepared.
  2. The grinding of the crankpins was successfully executed. The diameter of some of the crankpins was reduced by 0.5 MM and in some rare cases we have to grind to the undersize of 1.00 MM.
  3. The onsite crankshaft grinding machine developed and manufactured by RA Power Solutions is of latest design, it maintains the tolerance within 0.02 MM (20 Microns after grinding). The surface finish is of very high level 15 RA Value or less, which is highly recommended for long life of the bearings and crankshafts.
