Wartsila Engine 16V32LN Crankshaft Repair in Diesel Power Plant


RA Power Solutions was contacted by a leading power generation company based in South Africa. The company is engaged in generating power and supplying to the government regulated grid. They have multiple nos.of wartsila diesel generating sets of different models.

RA Power Solutions was informed about the serious breakdown in one of their wartsila  16V32LN  diesel generating set which was due to the failure of crankshaft.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to repair  crankshaft of wartsila Engine 16V32LN

Our two technicians arrived at the power plant along with all the inspection instruments and onsite crankshaft grinding machine.

On visual inspection of the sump the bearing chips were found under the crankpin number 02. On opening of the connecting rod the bearing was found to be badly damaged due to the over heating.

The main dimensions of Wartsila Engine 16V32LN crankpin are as following:

The inspection of the damaged crank pin number 02 was undertaken and following main observations were reported:

  • The ovality ranging from 0.08 mm to 1.25 mm in crankpin no. 02 was observed.
  • The hardness of the crankpin was taken and was observed to be on a higher side but due to its location it was considered to be not harmful for the satisfactorily performance of the  crankshaft.
  • As a matter of routine crack detection was done by MPI and no crack was observed. 
  • Deflection was also checked and was observed within limits.
  • The remaining crankpins no. 1,3,4,5,6,7,8 were  inspected and ovality was observed within limits.
  • Bearing line marks, rough surface and water marks were observed on crankpins and polishing was recommended.
  • The readings of damaged crank pin no. 02 of wartsila observed are as following:

  • The crankpin grinding was undertaken to the undersize of 1.5 mm and tolerance was maintained within 0.02mm. 
  • The readings obtained after grinding of crankpin no. 02 are as following:

  • The surface finish after grinding of 0.16 RA value was achieved.

Polishing of remaining crankpins of Wartsila Engine 16V32LN

All the remaining crankpins were polished by a specially designed onsite crankshaft polishing machine & surface finish of less than 0.20 RA value was achieved in case of all crankpins. 

The engine was commissioned in presence of our technicians to perform satisfactorily.
